This Origami Game Uses the Galaxy Z Fold’s Hinge as Its Controller

A new wave of experimental games is starting to treat the folding mechanism itself as an input method, opening the door to a new kind of gameplay. It’s definitely not the kind of gameplay we recommend trying on an expensive one, but it’s interesting enough that we couldn’t ignore it. And naturally, developers are now focusing on the one part of foldables that actually makes them different in the first place: the hinge.
We’ve already seen two of these hinge-driven games making the rounds online: a digital origami game shared on Reddit by u/maxwase and a Flappy Bird-style clone. In both cases, the hinge isn’t just there for show — it’s part of how the game works, which is something slab phones simply can’t pull off.
Origami comes to the Galaxy Z Fold, but not in a way we’d recommend
This origami-inspired game uses foldables’ hinge to simulate real paper folding. Instead of tapping buttons or dragging lines, players physically fold their device to match on-screen crease patterns. Each fold corresponds to a specific hinge angle, which lets the game read real-world motion as precise in-game input.
The result feels closer to manipulating real paper than playing a typical puzzle game. It’s a simple concept, but it shows how foldable hardware can enable experiences that feel natural and tactile instead of purely touch-based. Notably, the game runs in a browser and doesn’t require any special hardware tweaks, which makes it accessible to anyone with a compatible foldable phone.

To be fair, these projects are very much experiments. Foldables can survive plenty of opening and closing over time, but repeatedly snapping the hinge for gameplay is not exactly what manufacturers had in mind. At this point, hinge-driven games feel more like proof-of-concept demos than anything close to mainstream entertainment.
You can try them out of curiosity and you’ll probably be fine if it’s just for a few minutes. But it’s probably not a great idea to get too attached. After all, your foldable may not appreciate becoming a game controller.
