Samsung announced major upgrades for its Family Hub Refrigerator at CES 2026. The latest models integrate Google’s Gemini AI to solve what many people find to be the most stressful part of cooking: deciding what to make. Samsung also now offers motorized doors, allowing users to open their fridges with voice commands.

New Samsung refrigerators use AI to suggest recipes

According to Samsung, cooking itself isn’t the real problem, but choosing the daily menu is. The company is using AI to tackle the issue. Its updated Family Hub Refrigerator lineup comes with a downward-facing camera mounted at the top of the fridge. With Gemini’s advanced object-recognition technology, the refrigerator can recognize the items inside and suggest recipes.

While earlier Family Hub refrigerators also had internal cameras, their capabilities were limited. They could recognize fewer than 40 types of fresh food and roughly 50 packaged items. The new models can identify far more food types with higher accuracy and automatically create a detailed inventory. They track what you store, where each item is placed, and update the list every time something is taken out.

Another useful addition is text recognition. The camera can read labels on boxes and containers, so the fridge can alert you when certain food items are close to their expiration date. It can also keep track of lunchboxes, leftovers, and other items stored in containers. This makes it easier to remember what’s inside without opening every box.

Samsung Food app brings recipes based on what you have in your store

The real magic happens when your fridge inventory syncs with Samsung Food. Based on the ingredients you have in your store, the system suggests recipes you can cook right away. You can select a recipe and view step-by-step instructions on the refrigerator’s 32-inch touchscreen display. If you own a compatible Samsung oven, the fridge can even send the recipe directly to it, keeping both appliances in sync during cooking.

Samsung has also introduced a Video to Recipe feature. The refrigerator can recommend cooking videos and use AI to convert them into simple, step-by-step guides. This removes the need to pause videos repeatedly while cooking.

Another new feature, called FoodNote, provides weekly summaries of your food habits. It tracks which items are frequently added or removed and generates reports to help you shop smarter. Based on these patterns, the fridge recommends recipes and suggests which items you should restock. Now Brief, meanwhile, shows personalized information for each family member on the big screen.

Last but not least, Samsung’s smart fridges now come with a motorized door. Using Bixby voice commands like “Open the fridge door” or “Shut the fridge door,” users can open or close the fridge hands-free. The door opens fully, making it practical when carrying groceries or cooking. Not all models may boast all of these capabilities, but Samsung has surely kicked off a new era of smart home appliances. Its 2026 refrigerator lineup will go on sale in the coming months.
