Samsung Creates Memory Development Division to Oversee Memory Chips

Samsung has announced a major reorganization of its semiconductor business. The company will create a new organization under its DS (Device Solutions) Division to oversee the development of all memory chips. The goal is to boost competitiveness in memory technology and artificial intelligence (AI).

Samsung bolsters memory and AI strategy with major reorganization

Samsung’s DS (Device Solutions) Division includes the Memory, System LSI, and Foundry business units. During a recent executive briefing (via Chosun), the company said that its Memory business unit will comprise a new Memory Development Division. This division will serve as the central hub, coordinating all memory semiconductor development, including DRAM and NAND flash.

Previously, Samsung’s DRAM Development Division and Flash Development Division operated the Memory business unit. An industry insider says the new structure is likely a strategic move to respond to increasingly complex and intense memory technology competition, mainly in HBM.

Hwang Sang-jun, head of the DRAM Development Division, will lead the new Memory Development Division. Hwang is known for his work in redesigning the company’s HBM technology. As part of the reorganization, the HBM development team will now be integrated into the DRAM Development Division. This shows the company’s confidence in the maturity of its HBM technology. Son Young-soo, the former head of the HBM team, will lead the design team.

In addition to the Memory Development Division, Samsung will also create a Digital Twin Center (a virtual model of a physical environment) under the Global Manufacturing & Infrastructure Division. Meanwhile, the company plans to build an AI factory, where it will apply AI to all semiconductor design and production processes. The firm plans to use Nvidia’s Omniverse platform for an advanced digital manufacturing environment.

Samsung will complete the reorganization this week and review 2026’s business plans at a global strategy meeting next month. Meanwhile, the company announced its regular 2026 executive personnel promotions, elevating 161 employees to higher leadership positions.
