Well, the Android 16–based One UI 8 update has already rolled out to a bunch of Galaxy devices. One thing many of us may have missed is that Android 16 quietly introduced a change that makes app updates faster and smoother. Thankfully, a new report explains what those changes are and how they improve the app update process.

Android 16 quietly introduced a new “seamless app updates” feature

As Android Authority reports, Android 16 introduces “seamless app updates” to make the process of updating apps faster and smoother. Normally, when you update an app, Android temporarily “freezes” it to safely replace old files with new ones. This helps prevent crashes or data errors, but it also means the app can’t be used for a few seconds, especially if it’s large or system-critical.

n Android 16, Google has revamped how this process works to significantly reduce downtime. The update system now limits the freeze period to just a few milliseconds, making it virtually unnoticeable to users. You can keep using your apps without waiting for updates to finish, even when multiple apps are updating at once.

During app installation or updates, Android runs processes called dexopt and dex2oat, which optimize an app’s code so it runs more efficiently. In older versions, these processes were executed while the app was frozen, which extended update times. With Android 16, these optimizations now occur earlier in the process, before the app is temporarily frozen.

While the change might seem minor, it brings a noticeable improvement to everyday use. Large apps and games reopen faster, and system apps feel more responsive after updates. Best of all, this feature isn’t exclusive to Google Pixel phones, because it works across all devices running Android 16. So it should work on your Galaxy phone running One UI 8, too.
