Vodafone is partnering with Samsung to expand Open RAN across Europe. Open RAN is a way of building mobile networks that is more flexible, efficient, and easier to upgrade than traditional networks. Germany will be the first country to see it in action, with thousands of new sites planned over the next five years.

Vodafone and Samsung’s first Open RAN site is now live in Hannover

The first site is already live in Hannover, notes Samsung in press release. By early 2026, Wismar will become the first city fully covered by Open RAN. Unlike traditional networks, which rely on a single vendor for all equipment, Open RAN lets operators mix and match hardware and software from different companies. This makes it easier to expand coverage, add features, and manage traffic more efficiently.

Samsung is providing the core technology, including virtualized RAN software, modern radios like Massive MIMO, and its AI-powered Samsung CognitiV Network Operations Suite. The AI system helps the network run smoothly and save energy. For example, it can automatically switch off parts of the network when traffic is low and turn them back on when demand rises.

Others such as Dell, Intel, and Wind River are supplying servers, processors, and cloud systems. Vodafone is also using RAN sharing, which allows multiple operators to use the same network equipment. Open RAN is attracting attention in Europe because it gives operators more flexibility, efficiency, and control.

In a statement, Vodafone’s Chief Network Officer Alberto Ripepi said:

“Open RAN is a key pillar of our mission to build best-in-class networks and Vodafone has already proven the power of this innovative technology through our work with Samsung. The next step in our journey is to extend our Open RAN reach to more countries. By bringing in enhanced capabilities powered by AI and automation, we look forward to fostering a more advanced digital society as well as providing greater connectivity to our customers.”

Samsung’s Networks President Woojune Kim adds that the company is committed to supporting Vodafone with proven technology. He said the following in a statement:

“In the midst of a transformational shift in the telco industry, Samsung has been spearheading software-based and autonomous networks including vRAN and Open RAN. Leveraging our unmatched technological expertise and real-world pedigree, we are empowering our customers to have a competitive edge in evolving their networks in the AI era.”
