If you are wondering why Samsung is taking so long to launch its first Android XR headset (codenamed Project Moohan), there are some good reasons. The company wants to ensure the device meets high standards for comfort, performance, and AI features before it reaches buyers. We recently learned what critical fixes are being addressed to make the headset better.

You’ll enjoy better comfort and smarter AI with the Galaxy XR headset

Samsung has teamed up with Google and Qualcomm to develop the Android XR headset. The Mountain View company introduced the Android XR platform, an operating system designed for the new era of XR. Meanwhile, the American semiconductor firm built the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chipset to power the headset.

Earlier this year, Samsung teased Project Moohan at the Galaxy Unpacked event. We also saw real-world mockups at MWC 2025, and more recently at the Snapdragon Summit. At the Qualcomm event, executives shared some insights on the progress of the upcoming Galaxy XR headset.

In conversations with CNET at the event, Sameer Samat, Google’s head of Android, said that the team has made “subtle but very important refinements to the hardware.” These refinements focus on weight balance, ergonomics, and reducing light ingress, as people will wear the XR headset for hours.

“I saw early prototypes until now, big difference,” said Alex Katouzian, Qualcomm group general manager. “I think the weight and the balance is really good and mechanically very well designed.” So, these improvements compared to early prototypes will definitely make a big difference in how users experience the device.

Furthermore, the team has refined the integration of Gemini, allowing the AI assistant to see and hear what you experience in the virtual world. The Qualcomm chip now gives more computing power, bringing advancements to eye tracking. They have also improved other AI capabilities for non-Gemini applications like Google Photos.

As a result, we can expect the Galaxy XR headset to hit the market with better comfort, smarter AI features, and powerful hardware than the early prototypes. An earlier report suggested that the headset may go official on October 21, with pre-registration beginning on October 15. Stay tuned for more details.
