It looks like Samsung has finally passed Nvidia’s quality tests for its 12-layer HBM3E chips. A fresh report claims that the Korean firm will supply its memory product for the American giant’s water-cooled servers. If true, this will be a big win for Samsung, which has been desperately trying to enter Nvidia’s HBM supply chain for several months.

Samsung reportedly secured a deal with Nvidia for 12-layer HBM3E

Samsung has recently lost its long-standing top spot in the global memory chip market due to weaker performance in the growing HBM segment. The company now needs to secure HBM deals with major clients to bounce back in this space, and it may have just done that. According to a report from Alpha Economy, Samsung and Nvidia have recently reached an agreement where the Korean firm will supply its 12-layer HBM3E chips.

Speaking of volumes, the publication says Samsung will supply between 30,000 and 50,000 units of chips. Nvidia will use these cutting-edge high-bandwidth memory products in its water-cooled server systems. While this figure doesn’t look promising, it could pave the way for the Korean memory maker to secure larger follow-on orders.

The report didn’t mention whether Samsung has obtained certification from Nvidia for its 12-layer HBM3E. This step ensures that memory chips have passed all performance and reliability benchmarks. However, the recent deal suggests Samsung has cleared the tests, though the company has yet to announce it publicly.

A few weeks ago, Samsung struck a 12-layer HBM3E chip supply deal with Nvidia’s rival AMD. And now, by securing orders from both of the world’s leading AI chip makers, the Korean firm will be able to recover some lost market share in this space.

Meanwhile, Samsung has begun sample production of its sixth-generation high-bandwidth memory chip, HBM4, for Nvidia. If these samples are approved, it will help the company secure deals with Nvidia early. Only time will tell if the Korean giant succeeds in overtaking its competitors in the AI memory market.
