Samsung is gearing up to start mass production of advanced chips at its new facility in Taylor, Texas. It has already secured a deal worth $16.5 billion with Tesla to manufacture the carmaker’s next-generation AI6 chip at this factory. The company is now planning to increase its investment, suggesting it is in the process of securing more big deals.

Samsung’s investment in the Taylor semiconductor hub may exceed $50 billion

Samsung has yet to make its Taylor semiconductor hub operational. It failed to begin mass production of chips at the plant as originally planned — first in 2024, then again in 2025. The main reason was the slower demand for advanced nodes from clients at the time. The company began construction in 2022 with a plan to invest around $17 billion. It then increased to $44 billion after adding a second factory.

The original investment plan included 4nm and 2nm foundry lines, advanced packaging facilities, and research and development (R&D) facilities. For the advanced packaging facility, the firm allocated $7 billion, but this portion was later dropped due to difficulties in securing customers. As a result, the current investment plan is $37 billion.

According to a report from SEdaily, Samsung is considering adding KRW 10 trillion (around $7.2 billion) to its packaging facilities at the Taylor factory. Industry analysts link this move to new big orders from Tesla and potentially other global clients. Furthermore, if the company handles everything from core chip manufacturing to post-processing locally, it will avoid US tariff pressures. Basically, Samsung wants to improve its turnkey manufacturing capabilities by integrating memory, foundry, and packaging.

In addition to increasing investment in packaging facilities, the Korean firm is also expected to boost spending on equipment and materials. “Including additional investments in packaging plants, the size of Samsung’s Taylor fab investment will exceed $50 billion,” an industry official told the publication.

Speaking of the progress of Taylor hub construction, it is over 91% complete. Samsung plans to complete cleanroom work within this year and install semiconductor production equipment in 2026. It will be interesting to see if the firm succeeds in beginning mass production of chips next year.
