Android 17’s Internal Codename Revealed, and It’s a Sweet Surprise

Google may have retired dessert names from its marketing years ago, but internally the sweet tradition is still very much alive. The next major Android release, Android 17, now has its internal codename, and it’s one you probably didn’t see coming: Cinnamon Bun. That’s according to our friends at Android Authority.
Android 17’s internal codename is Cinnamon Bun!
For over a decade, Android versions rolled out with both a number and a dessert-themed nickname. Fans will remember the days of Cupcake, KitKat, and Marshmallow plastered across Google’s launch events. That ended in 2019 with Android 10. Google opted for simpler, globally consistent branding. Still, developers kept the naming habit alive behind closed doors.

In recent years, these names have been tied to a new build ID system introduced under Google’s “Trunk Stable” project. Instead of branching off separate code versions for each release, Google now works from one main codebase and hides in-progress features behind flags. This approach also introduced a yearly naming pattern, with the first letter of each codename changing annually.
Android 15 was “Vanilla Ice Cream,” starting with “V” from its release year. Android 16, released in 2025, carried the name “Baklava,” matching the “B” for that year’s builds. For 2026, the letter moves to “C,” and Google has settled on “Cinnamon Bun.”
Internally, Android 17 will be tagged as API level 37.0. The codename may appear in early beta builds, but the public release will simply list “Android 17” in system settings. If Google sticks with its updated schedule, the stable version should land around June 2026, giving device makers time to preload it on summer flagships.
And who knows? We might see Samsung pull a Google again by releasing One UI 9 on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Flip 8.
