Samsung SDI Battery-Powered EV Sets New Guinness World Record

Samsung has a solid presence in the battery manufacturing segment through its subsidiary Samsung SDI. The company recently announced that an electric vehicle powered by its 21700 cylindrical batteries has set a new Guinness World Record. This is for the longest journey by an electric car on a single charge.

The record shows SAMSUNG SDI’s world-class battery technology

The vehicle is the Lucid Air Grand Touring, designed and made by the American company Lucid. The car drove 1,205 kilometers (749 miles) without stopping to recharge, travelling from St. Moritz, Switzerland, to Munich, Germany. The route included alpine roads, highways, and secondary roads.

The previous record was 1,045 kilometers on a single charge. Lucid exceeded that by 160 kilometers, setting a new benchmark at the Guinness World Record. Samsung says its cutting-edge battery technology played a big role in making this possible. Furthermore, Lucid’s in-house powertrain platform and outstanding design and engineering contributed greatly to this milestone.

“With SAMSUNG SDI’s cylindrical battery powering the world’s longest-range vehicle, we have proven our technological prowess,” said a SAMSUNG SDI official. “We will strengthen our partnership with Lucid to expand our global market share and accelerate the development of products that combine differentiated performance and safety.”

Speaking of the Lucid Air Grand Touring, it is the longest-range version of Lucid’s flagship sedan. This high-performance car can go from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.2 seconds. The car delivers up to 831 horsepower with a whopping top speed of 270 km/h. Thanks to its advanced battery and ultra-fast charging architecture, it can gain up to 400 kilometers of range in just 16 minutes.

The collaboration between SAMSUNG SDI and Lucid began in 2016. Since then, the Korean firm has continued to support Lucid by supplying advanced battery cells. The latest Guinness World Record not only shows Lucid’s engineering but also strengthens Samsung SDI’s presence in the EV industry.
