Samsung is gearing up to launch its first extended reality (XR) headset later this year. The device (codenamed Project Moohan) recently cleared a safety test in South Korea, meaning the product is ready for the market. However, Samsung says it’s just the beginning of something bigger — this headset is a step toward a whole new category of XR devices.

Samsung’s bigger XR ambitions to begin with Project Moohan

Samsung has teased its XR headset several times, though there is still no official launch date. However, it looks like the company is finally nearing launch — the device has obtained a certificate from the Korea Testing & Research Institute (KTR) with the model number SM-I610. A previous report claimed the headset may go official on September 29 at an event in South Korea.

The Korean firm has teamed up with Google and Qualcomm for the Project Moohan. Built on Google’s Android XR platform, the XR headset will feature Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 processor. The device will be a major leap in technology innovation, though it may debut with a steep price tag — reportedly between $2,000 and $3,000.

However, Samsung sees Project Moohan as a first step toward future XR devices like smart glasses. “The XR headset Infinite is more like a test bed for entering the XR market, while the real battleground is the smart glasses,” said an official familiar with Samsung Electronics (via DealSite). The company aims to see market response and test the competitiveness of XR devices through its first XR headset.

The official also said that a lightweight, wearable XR device like smart glasses is more suitable for widespread use than a bulky headset. However, the smart glasses are still in the early stages of development. A few days ago, a Samsung executive said, “For XR glasses, we need to consider broader usability and multiple partnerships. We are currently in the process of planning and developing various things.”

For now, all eyes are on the XR headset — Samsung will reportedly launch it first in its home market, followed by other regions later. We will keep you posted if any new information is available about Project Moohan and smart glasses.
