For the first time in recent memory, the global memory chip market doesn’t have a clear leader. Competition is heating up, and that also means some bad news for Samsung’s memory division. SK hynix has caught up with Samsung in the global memory market.

SK hynix is now Samsung’s biggest threat in memory business

According to Counterpoint Research, both SK hynix and Samsung posted $15.5 billion in revenue from DRAM and NAND sales in Q2 2025. It’s a significant moment for SK hynix, which has been narrowing the gap with Samsung for several quarters.

Just last year, SK hynix was coming off a $2.7 billion loss in Q1 2023. That slump led to production cuts and a strategic shift. But rather than scaling back entirely, the company leaned into its strengths, ramping up investment in high-performance memory like HBM3E. It was the first to mass-produce the technology in early 2024, and that bet is now paying off.

By Q1 2025, SK hynix had already overtaken Samsung in DRAM revenue. Matching it in overall memory revenue just one quarter later highlights how quickly the landscape is shifting.

Samsung, on the other hand, is facing more challenges. Its operating profit fell 56 percent year over year this quarter. While it is also shipping HBM3E chips, especially to AMD and Broadcom, its position is less stable. Shipments to NVIDIA, a key customer, are reportedly facing delays, and tighter export controls on sales to China are limiting its growth potential.

The result is a rare moment of parity between the two biggest names in memory. Whether SK hynix can stay competitive long term will depend on sustained demand for AI and high-performance chips and on its ability to meet that demand faster than Samsung. Either way, this quarter marks a clear shift. The memory chip market is no longer a one-player game. Samsung has real competition again.
