WhatsApp is making it easier for users to stay on top of their conversations with the launch of Message Summaries, a new feature powered by Meta AI. This tool offers a smart, private way to quickly understand what’s been said, without reading every individual message. It can be useful when you’re rushing between meetings, catching up after a flight, or simply overwhelmed by unread chats.

WhatsApp introduces AI-powered Message Summaries

Message Summaries use artificial intelligence to generate quick, personalized overviews of your unread messages in a chat. Whether it’s a busy group conversation or a friend sending updates while you were offline, the feature gives you a concise summary so you can catch up at a glance, then decide if you want to dive deeper into the details.

According to the company, the feature uses Meta’s Private Processing technology to locally and privately generate summaries of your unread messages. It promises to keep your chats confidential with end-to-end encryption even when AI processes the data, meaning neither WhatsApp nor its parent firm Meta, can ever see your messages or the summaries created by AI.

Additionally, no one in the chat will know that you’ve summarized the messages, preserving your discretion. Message Summaries is optional and off by default, so you must opt in to enable the feature. Further customization is available through Advanced Chat Privacy settings, allowing you to control which chats are eligible for AI features.

This tool is initially rolling out in English to users in the United States, with plans to expand to more languages and regions later this year. It’s the latest step in blending AI convenience with the trusted security users expect from WhatsApp. For the technically curious, WhatsApp has made a detailed engineering blog and technical whitepaper available, explaining how Private Processing works under the hood.
