Gemini Could Soon Borrow Autocomplete Feature from Google Search

Every time we search for something on Google, a bunch of suggestions pop up. Tapping on any of them instantly completes our query and saves us a good chunk of time. For instance, when you search for “best time to visit Japan,” you’ll see suggestions like “…in summer,” “…with family,” and so on. Now that same handy autocomplete experience might be coming to the Gemini app.
Gemini looks to be testing autocomplete queries feature
As spotted by the fine folks at Android Authority, the feature is available in the latest Google app beta, version 16.21.55. Google is currently testing autocomplete for queries within the Gemini app. It’s not officially live yet, but the publication managed to activate the feature. And it looks quite helpful. You can check out the screenshots, courtesy of Android Authority.
You’ll notice this mirrors the well-known behavior from Google Search: as you type, Gemini begins predicting what you might want to ask. After you input around three to four characters, it offers three dynamic suggestions. These suggestions continue to update as more characters are typed, and tapping one sends the query straight to Gemini for a response.
For now, the functionality is limited to new conversations started from the main screen of the Gemini app. It doesn’t yet work in ongoing chats or in the Gemini overlay (the floating assistant mode). This narrow scope suggests the feature is still under development and not quite ready for prime time.

While this may seem like a small tweak, autocomplete can be a game-changer for the user experience. It cuts down on typing and saves time. In fact, ChatGPT offers a similar feature, but it’s currently only available on the web. On ChatGPT for Android version 1.2025.147, it hasn’t rolled out yet. It’ll be interesting to see which one crosses the finish line first. Will it be Gemini or ChatGPT?
