Samsung leads the pack when it comes to software support for Android devices. With up to seven years of updates promised for flagships and six years for budget models, the company has built a strong reputation in this space. But even Samsung has to draw the line somewhere, and June 2025 marks the end of the road for three aging devices. The Galaxy M42, Tab A7 Lite, and Tab S6 Lite won’t receive updates anymore.

Samsung ends update support for three Galaxy devices

Samsung recently updated its official update support list, and three models have now fallen off the list. The Galaxy M42, a 5G smartphone launched in April 2021 with Android 11 onboard, is no longer eligible for updates. It picked up Android 12 and Android 13 over the past four years, alongside regular security patches. Likewise, the Galaxy Tab A7 Lite arrived in May 2021 with Android 11 out of the box. It received updates up to Android 14.

The third Samsung device that has stopped getting updates is the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite, a mid-range tablet launched in April 2020. Debuted with Android 10, it received feature updates up to Android 13. Interestingly, Samsung also seems to have ended support for its 2022 refresh, which comes as a surprise. It ran Android 12 out of the box and picked up Android 14 last year.

While we expected Samsung to provide security updates to the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite (2022) for at least another year, it’s no longer listed as a supported device. It’s unclear if that’s an error or an intentional change. Meanwhile, the 2024 refresh — yes, Samsung launched two refreshed versions of this tablet — is still eligible for a few Android OS/ One UI upgrades alongside security patches for several more years.

With this change, the Galaxy M42, Tab A7 Lite, and Tab S6 Lite are no longer guaranteed to receive any security patches or software updates. However, Samsung has occasionally issued critical patches for unsupported devices in the past, especially if it discovers major vulnerabilities. So while the door isn’t completely shut, regular updates are officially over.
