At I/O 2025, Google Beam Flaunts Futuristic AI-Powered 3D Video Calling

Yesterday, during the I/O 2025 keynote, Google revealed some major updates, some already available and others arriving soon. It was an exciting event with a strong focus on AI and Gemini. There were also some really cool launches, including Google Beam. Honestly, it’s about to change the way we do video calls.

Google Beam feels super futuristic with unique 3D video chat experience

Unlike regular video chats where you see a flat image on a screen, Google Beam uses six cameras to capture you from different angles. Then an AI system combines these views to create a life-size 3D image of you on a special screen. So when you’re talking to someone, it feels like they’re right there in front of you. You don’t need to wear anything. By which, I mean no glasses or headsets to get the experience. FYI, it’s been in the works for a few years now under Project Starline.

The special display uses something called a light field to show this 3D image, and it even tracks your head movements to keep the picture looking natural. That way, you can make eye contact and catch those little facial expressions. Google says this helps people feel more connected and less wiped out during meetings. The Verge got an early hands-on, and honestly, it’s pretty surreal to see it in action.

It’s coming later this year

It also uses powerful cloud computing to handle all the heavy lifting, which helps make the device smaller and more affordable. HP is teaming up with Google to build the first commercial versions of the Beam hardware, and those will start showing up in some offices later this year. Companies like Salesforce and Deloitte are already planning to use Beam, according to Google.

There are plans to add more features soon, like group calls and live translation between languages. Google’s goal is to bring Beam not just to offices but eventually into people’s homes. For now, though, Google Beam is still taking baby steps, but we’re all set for a wider release down the road.
