Google Testing Discover on Desktop, and Honestly, It Looks Pretty Good

You’ve probably noticed how articles and videos appear when you swipe on your phone’s home screen or open Google Chrome. That feature is called Google Discover. And now, Google is testing Discover on desktop.

Google Discover makes it to desktop homepage in select regions

First spotted by AnellDam on X (via Search Engine Roundtable), Google is now rolling out Discover on desktop’s web homepage in select regions. For now, these include New Zealand and Australia. The user also shared a link to Google New Zealand, which lets you check it out directly. Here’s a screenshot of how it looks on my side. Of course, your version may look different depending on your interests. I see a lot of tech content, so that’s what shows up for me.

The Discover feed highlights articles and updates based on what Google thinks you’re interested in. That might include tech news, entertainment, sports, or finance. On desktop, the layout is a bit different from mobile. The images are smaller and aligned to the left, and each article preview includes the first sentence, making it easier to skim.

There’s also an “At a Glance” section on the right side of the screen. It shows quick updates on things like weather, finance, and sports. I don’t follow sports often, and fortunately, Google allows you to customize this section by clicking the three-dot icon next to each card.

There’s no official timeline yet for when Discover will expand to more regions beyond New Zealand and Australia. But once it does, I think it could be a solid addition. I was skeptical at first, but it turns out to be pretty useful. If you’re not a fan of the Discover feed or just prefer a cleaner homepage, Search Engine Roundtable reports that there’s a way to turn it off. Just go to Settings > Other Settings > Turn off Show Discover on home page.
