Samsung may finally be upgrading the camera hardware on its non-Ultra Galaxy S flagships. Next year’s Galaxy S26 and S26+ may feature a new 50MP main camera sensor, marking the first significant hardware change in the past several years. While the Galaxy S23 and newer models also have a 50MP main camera, the company has been reusing the same ISOCELL GN3 sensor.

Galaxy S26 could introduce a new 50MP main camera

While still capable, the GN3 sensor used on the base and Plus models since the Galaxy S23 series is beginning to show its age. As competitors push for more advanced optics and sensor technology, Samsung surely doesn’t want to lag behind. It appears to be readying the next-gen models with a new 50MP main camera.

While the resolution remains the same, an upgraded sensor should mean better image quality. The exact model name and technical specifications are currently unknown, but it should feature improved internals and possibly newer pixel technology. You can expect the Galaxy S26 and S26+ to offer enhanced details, faster processing, and better HDR performance.

Well, Galaxy Club, the source of this information, says Samsung is preparing the new 50MP main camera for the Galaxy S26 with no mention of the Plus model. However, the company has historically used the same camera setup on both the base and Plus models of its S series. We expect the trend to continue next year.

That said, there have been rumors about Samsung potentially discontinuing the Plus model. It may replace the Galaxy S26+ with the S26 Edge. In that case, the Edge model should feature a 200MP main camera. Samsung also plans new AI tools and camera features, including Virtual Aperture for Portrait Mode, for its future flagships. Expect more details to emerge in the coming months.
