Samsung Reportedly Pushing for Nintendo Switch 2 OLED Refresh

The Nintendo Switch 2 is coming on June 5, and expectations are naturally high. While it will bring a faster custom Nvidia chip and HDR support, it will ship with an LCD screen instead of OLED. Well, that could be a letdown for some.

Samsung wants to supply panels for Nintendo Switch 2 OLED variant

Samsung is reportedly pushing for an OLED refresh of the Nintendo Switch 2. As first reported by Bloomberg, Samsung wants to supply OLED panels for a future version of the console, similar to its role in the previous generation. Nintendo’s decision to use an LCD this time is said to be based on recent advancements in LCD technology. Notably, the new LCD panel supports HDR, which the existing OLED model does not.

Still, Samsung is hoping to renew its OLED partnership with Nintendo and be part of a potential mid-cycle upgrade. While Nintendo hasn’t confirmed any plans, the success of the first OLED model suggests another refresh could be on the cards.

Samsung is already involved in Nintendo Switch 2 development

Samsung is already involved in Nintendo Switch 2 production, building the custom Nvidia Tegra T239 chip using its 8nm process. According to the Bloomberg report, with Samsung’s support, Nintendo could be in a position to ship as many as 20 million Switch 2 units by March 2026. That would be well above Nintendo’s current projection of 15 million units in the first year.

If approved, a Nintendo Switch 2 OLED version would likely offer better colors, deeper contrast, and improved efficiency. For now, though, Nintendo seems focused on its early June release. As well as meeting the strong pre-order demand.
