Google Play services run in the background on your Android device so that apps work smoothly. Recently, many Android device users have been facing a weird bug with Google Play services. An “Update Google Play services” notification is popping up on their smartphone every couple of minutes. The most frustrating thing is that even when the user dismisses the notification, the message keeps coming back.
Google apps sending “Update Google Play Services” notifications to Android users
According to a report from 9to5Google, several first-party Google apps are sending the “Update Google Play services” notification to many Android device owners, including those using Google Pixel and Samsung phones. However, when they tap on the message, they are taken to the Google Play Store, and there is no update available. The notification does not go away, no matter what they do — it comes back a few minutes later.
The latest stable version of Google Play services is v25.10, and users who have installed this version are also getting this notification. Basic troubleshooting methods like rebooting or clearing Storage/Cache do not resolve the issue. Some people have suggested checking for updates by going to their phone’s Security & Privacy > Updates section, but this does not solve the issue.
A user @ArtemR posted on X, saying, “A phantom Google Play services update prompt in Google Messages as of this morning.” Another person wrote on Reddit, “This is occurring on my S25 Ultra but not my Pixel 9 Pro XL. The Ultra is running version 25.09.62, while the Pixel is running version 25.10.33. Both are on non-beta firmware.”
This is most likely a bug, and Google is probably aware of it, though the company has not officially acknowledged it. People are hoping that Google will soon fix this problem with an update. Until then, users have to deal with these recurring notifications. Stay connected with us! We will let you know as soon as new information about this bug becomes available.
