Will Your Galaxy Chromebook Get the Upcoming Android-Based Update?

Galaxy Chromebook owners have probably been wondering where they stand since Google confirmed it’s working on a new desktop platform that blends Android and Chrome OS. The project, internally called Aluminium OS, is meant to refresh how Chromebooks work behind the scenes. The big question, though, is whether existing laptops, especially older models, will actually get the update.

Not every Galaxy Chromebook will receive the big Android-based update

John Maletis, Google’s VP of Product Management for ChromeOS, recently said during an AMA with Chrome Unboxed that not every Chromebook will be able to move over to the new Android-based system. Some devices just don’t meet the technical requirements, which means a few older Galaxy Chromebooks could miss out on Aluminium OS.

The good news is this doesn’t suddenly make those laptops useless. Google still promises up to ten years of software and security updates from a Chromebook’s launch date. So even if your Galaxy Chromebook sticks with the current version of ChromeOS, it’ll keep getting updates and stay safe to use for years. For most people, that matters more than having the latest platform label.

Maletis also tried to ease concerns that ChromeOS is quietly being phased out. Chromebooks are everywhere in schools, offices, and homes, and Google isn’t planning to pull the plug anytime soon. Instead, ChromeOS and the new Android-based platform will run side by side for a while. Over time, as older devices reach the end of support, ChromeOS could slowly fade out. But there’s no sudden switch coming.

Samsung’s been making Chromebooks since 2011 and has steadily refined the Galaxy Chromebook lineup. Newer models, especially recent launches like the Galaxy Chromebook Plus with updated hardware and AI features, are more likely to make the cut for Aluminium OS.

If you’re using an older Galaxy Chromebook, expect it to stay on ChromeOS with full support. If you’ve got a newer one, there’s a better chance it’ll get the new platform. Either way, your laptop isn’t getting left behind anytime soon.
