WhatsApp has taken a key step to improve the experience for its web version users. The company has brought voice and video calling functionality to WhatsApp Web. The features are currently rolling out for beta users, though they should reach regular users in the coming weeks.

WhatsApp brings voice and video calling to web users

While WhatsApp’s mobile and desktop (Windows and Mac) apps have offered voice and video calling for years, these features were not available on the web version until now. The web user could only send messages and share media like photos and videos. Thankfully, WhatsApp Web users can now enjoy the same calling experience as mobile and desktop app users (via WABetaInfo).

Now, when you open the web version of WhatsApp in a browser, you can start voice or video calls directly from an individual chat using the calls button. This is particularly helpful for Linux users as they don’t have access to a dedicated WhatsApp desktop app. Additionally, Windows and Mac users can now access call features directly in a browser, eliminating the need to install the app.

The company also offers end-to-end encryption for all voice and video calls in the web version. This means only participants on the call can hear and see. Apart from calling, WhatsApp Web supports screen sharing during video calls. This feature lets you share documents or other content in real time, which is helpful for online meetings. Note that you should use screen sharing carefully, as all content on your screen becomes visible to the other participant.

Meanwhile. WhatsApp is also reportedly working on group calling (voice and video) for the web version. Group calls can support up to 32 participants and include features such as call links and scheduled calls. However, the company currently seems focused on rolling out one-on-one calling support on the web first, while group calling remains in development for a future update.
