WhatsApp is working on a new feature that lets you log out without deleting app data, like how you can log out from social media apps. This is particularly helpful for users who want to take a break from the messaging app while retaining their data. This feature is currently hidden within the beta version of the app.

As of now, if you want to disable WhatsApp for a few weeks or months, the only option is to delete your account. However, this also results in the loss of user data and removal from groups, which is inconvenient. Thankfully, WhatsApp is now addressing this issue to give users more flexibility on its messaging platform.

You may soon be able to log out of WhatsApp without losing anything

While digging into the latest WhatsApp beta (version 2.25.17.37) APK, folks over at Android Authority discovered a new Logout option within account settings. If you tap on that option, it opens a pop-up with two options: “Erase all Data & preferences” and “Keep all Data & preferences”.

The publication says the first option is like uninstalling the app from your device. It not only logs out of the chat app, but also deletes all app data and preferences. However, you will still stay in your group, meaning it does not automatically remove you from the group.

Speaking of the second option, it’s a useful addition as it keeps all app data and preferences, but also lets you log out. This means that even after a short break, you can get back your app data. You just need to log in to your account using the registered mobile number.

It is worth mentioning that the Logout option is still present on linked devices, but it doesn’t allow you to log out on your primary device. On your primary device, you only have the option to delete your WhatsApp account, which deletes app data as well as removes you from all groups.

As for when you can take advantage of this feature, there’s no official word from WhatsApp. However, the publication claims that the new Logout option is being tested internally, suggesting it may be rolled out on the beta channel in the coming weeks. We will keep you posted if there are any developments regarding the feature.
