OnePlus and Oppo fans have long loved Open Canvas, a multitasking feature that lets you juggle multiple apps simultaneously, with the ones you’re not actively using overflowing off the edges of the display. Now, a peculiar bug in Samsung’s One UI 8 brings a similar experience to the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and it’s surprisingly easy to reproduce. Here’s how you can try it yourself.

Here’s how to activate this Open Canvas bug on Galaxy Z Fold 7

Reddit user u/traneric1 stumbled upon this glitch by accident, and YouTuber Shane Craig confirmed it’s consistently reproducible. Here’s the step-by-step:

  1. Enter a 90:10 split with two apps, one on top and one below.
  2. Open the Edge Panel settings by swiping in and pressing the floating settings icon
  3. Back out of the settings page to return to your split screen.
  4. Drag out a third app from the Edge Panel. You’ll be able to add it without losing the top window.

So, how does it work, after all?

This trick exploits Android 16’s new 90:10 split screen mode, which normally only supports two apps side-by-side. Using this workaround, you effectively stack three apps, creating a multitasking layout reminiscent of OnePlus’ Open Canvas on the Galaxy Z Fold 7.

However, it’s not without quirks. Visual glitches appear when switching focus between the top and bottom halves, and resizing the bottom two apps causes the top window to lock. Additionally, the buttons for saving app pairs or switching split orientation are inconsistent and sometimes don’t bring up the correct menus.

It’s likely Samsung will patch this bug in a future update, but it’s an exciting glimpse at what could be possible. This glitch proves Samsung could easily implement their own version of Open Canvas, allowing multiple overflowing apps and enhancing power user features.

If Samsung decides to lean into this, it would be a major win alongside existing staples like floating windows and the revamped Samsung DeX.
