Sony has confirmed plans to spin off its TV and home audio business into a new joint venture where TCL will take the driver’s seat. Under the agreement, TCL will own 51% of the new company, while Sony will keep a 49% stake, effectively handing operational control to the Chinese display giant.

Sony confirms TCL partnership for Bravia TVs and home audio products

The joint venture will cover TVs and home audio products such as soundbars and speakers. It could handle product planning, development, manufacturing, logistics, and after-sales support. The companies aim to finalize agreements by March this year, pending regulatory approval, with operations scheduled to begin in April 2027. As a result, nothing changes for buyers in the near term.

“The new company’s products are expected to carry the globally recognized “Sony” name and “BRAVIA™” name, aiming to create new customer value through these branded products such as TVs and home audio equipment,” noted the press release.

This could make future Bravia TVs more price competitive. However, it also means Sony is stepping further away from being an independent TV manufacturer, especially compared with Samsung, which still controls much of its own display technology and manufacturing.

Samsung has led the global TV market for more than a decade by combining premium models with strong midrange options while maintaining control over panel development and production. This gives Samsung more flexibility and margin control than Sony has on its own.

If the partnership works, future Bravia models could combine Sony’s image processing with TCL’s lower-cost hardware, increasing competition in the upper midrange. Whether that will seriously challenge Samsung remains unclear, especially as Samsung continues to expand QD-OLED, Mini-LED, and AI-based upscaling across its lineup.
