We’re only a few weeks into 2026, and early rumors about Qualcomm’s next flagship chipset are already making the rounds. The chip is reportedly called the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro, and beyond raw performance gains, it may also use Samsung’s Heat-Pass Block (HPB) thermal tech.

According to Weibo leaker Fixed-focus digital camera, HPB (first introduced with Exynos 2600) is expected to appear in other Android chipsets as well. While Qualcomm isn’t mentioned directly, the leaker refers to “many manufacturers that commonly use Android chips. (machine-translated)” Well, this strongly points to Snapdragon.

HPB improves heat transfer directly from the silicon to the cooling solution, rather than relying only on traditional heat spreaders. This could help sustain higher peak performance and reduce throttling, which has become more common in recent Snapdragon flagships.

Both the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and Snapdragon 8 Elite initially showed thermal stability issues in early devices. But the problem was late fixed, thanks to updates that followed. Earlier Snapdragon generations didn’t face the same level of scrutiny, suggesting that rising clock speeds are pushing mobile cooling systems closer to their limits.

The standard efficiency gains aren’t enough to make up for the increased heat output of Qualcomm’s chips; the benefit of the Heat-Pass Block, which goes directly to the source to cool the chipset, will help Qualcomm push its chipsets even further.

Currently, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 runs at up to 4.61GHz, while Samsung’s “For Galaxy” version reaches 4.74GHz. The next-generation Pro variant is expected to cross the 5.0GHz mark. And well… who knows maybe it could approach 6.0GHz, though that would be extremely aggressive for mobile silicon.

It’s still unclear how Qualcomm would position a Pro chipset in its lineup. The company could either replace the top-tier Elite model or introduce a new performance tier above it. Either that, that will further complicate an already crowded naming scheme.

Either way, Qualcomm will need to avoid creating confusion, especially as smartphone makers already differentiate chips further with “For Galaxy” and other custom variants. The bottomline is Samsung’s HPB could end up playing a big role in enabling Qualcomm’s next major performance leap. What makes it even more interesting is the fact that the two companies are also competitors in the chipset space.
