Samsung is preparing to take foldable smartphones to the next level with its first-ever tri-fold device, possibly called the Galaxy G Fold. The device is expected to launch alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and other foldables in mid-2025, between July and August. A recent leak revealed its alleged cover screen size, and it’s big.
Samsung’s first tri-fold will sport a big cover screen
While Huawei has already launched a tri-fold foldable, Samsung is taking a different approach to its offering. The so-called Galaxy G Fold will fold inward from both sides — Huawei’s Mate XT Ultimate folds inward once and outward once, eliminating the need for a cover screen. The part that folds outward serves as the cover screen when the device is in folded state.
Samsung’s unique approach required it to develop a special folding mechanism and display technology. Its tri-fold features two distinct hinge mechanisms, each operating uniquely to ensure seamless folding and unfolding. This is because one part has to fold with a larger curvature than the other, as it folds over the other part.
This device may also utilize an advanced form of Ultra-Thin Glass (UTG) that differs from the technology used in the Galaxy Z Fold 7. This new flexible glass is thinner, likely making the device more lightweight while maintaining durability. While the current prototype allegedly has a peak brightness of 1,900 nits in testing, the final product could go up to 2,600 nits, aligning with other upcoming foldables.
The new leak also reveals that Samsung’s tri-fold will feature a similar cover display as the Galaxy Z Fold 7. We are talking about a 6.5-inch external screen. The device is shaping up to be a revolutionary addition to the Korean firm’s foldable lineup. It could redefine multitasking and mobile productivity.
