Samsung’s Tri-Fold Phone Is Ready — Launch Delayed Deliberately

Samsung unveiled a wave of new devices at its Unpacked event on Wednesday, but one highly anticipated product was noticeably absent: the tri-fold smartphone. Despite years of teasers and speculation, the company chose not to debut the device just yet. According to a Samsung executive, it’s not because the technology isn’t ready — it is. Instead, the Korean firm is holding back because it doesn’t believe the market is ready.
Samsung is ready to launch its tri-fold, but it doesn’t see demand in the market
The device, supposedly called the Galaxy G Fold, has been in development for some time and even made a brief appearance during the Galaxy S25 launch event in January. In the months since, leaks and rumors have trickled out, offering glimpses of its potential. Yet it was completely missing from the recent unveiling of the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7.
Now, thanks to a Samsung executive speaking with Android Authority, we finally have a clearer picture of what’s going on behind the scenes. They not only confirmed the device’s existence but revealed that the tri-fold phone isn’t just a concept — it is fully designed and ready for mass production. However, the company is still weighing whether there’s enough demand to justify launching it.
“We’ve had a tri-fold for some time, designed and everything. So it’s not a new concept to us. What we’re debating is the viability. When I say the viability, is there really a demand for this form factor?” the Samsung representative said. It looks like the Korean firm doesn’t want to release the Galaxy G Fold just to make headlines. It wants to make sure people will actually buy it.
Despite the uncertainty, Korean media suggest that Samsung may test the waters with a limited release later this year. The Galaxy G Fold is reportedly heading into production in September, with a Q4 launch planned in South Korea and China. This regional launch would help Samsung gauge real-world demand before deciding on a global rollout. Expect more details to emerge in the coming months.
