Tecno has achieved a major breakthrough in its camera technology. The company has recently launched new systems for true continuous optical zoom that could redefine the future of mobile photography. Samsung will also play a big role in bringing these innovations to life, alongside Largan, a Taiwanese manufacturer of optical components for devices.

Tecno’s new camera systems offer true continuous optical zoom with a compact design

At its latest Future Lens event, Tecno presented Freeform Continuum Telephoto and Dual-Mirror Reflect Telephoto. These two advanced systems aim to fix long-standing problems in smartphone cameras. They will deliver smoother zooming and smaller camera modules, giving Tecno a big leap in imaging hardware.

The Freeform Continuum Telephoto offers true continuous optical zoom from 1x to 9x. Instead of switching between multiple lenses (this can cause sudden color changes), this system uses a single adjustable lens that smoothly transitions through all zoom levels. The system is still under development and should appear on phones in about a year.

Meanwhile, Dual-Mirror Reflect Telephoto uses two mirrors to focus the light inside the camera. This allows the telephoto module to shrink by up to 50%, making it easier for smartphone brands to make slimmer phones without losing zoom performance. Since many premium phones are still suffering from bulky camera bumps, this technology could be a significant advantage. It may feature in phones as early as next year.

“We’re transitioning from simply capturing light to intelligently understanding scenes. Our systems now analyze composition intent, subject characteristics, and even emotional tone to deliver images that are both technically precise and emotionally resonant,” said Xiaohan Huang, Director of Tecno’s Image R&D Center. “This represents the next frontier where computational photography meets creative empowerment.”

As far as Samsung’s role is concerned, the Korean firm is one of Tecno’s manufacturing partners for these cameras. Whether Samsung plans to bring something similar to its future Galaxy phones remains to be seen, but this will help the Korean firm gain solid experience in continuous optical zoom technology.
