Samsung Surprises Buyer With SSD Refund Higher Than Purchase

Samsung aims to improve customer experience with its products and services. A recent case has come to light in which a customer received a refund higher than the original purchase price for a failed SSD.
Samsung shows how a warranty can benefit customers
In a recent post on Reddit, a user shared their experience with a Samsung 990 Pro 4TB M.2 SSD that began failing randomly and eventually became completely corrupted. The customer reached out to Samsung support and submitted proof of purchase along with the faulty SSD. After evaluating the drive, the company initially offered a heatsink model as a replacement.
The customer, however, declined this model because it does not fit their laptop. As a result, Samsung agreed to provide the correct model. A few weeks later, the company told the customer that the same model is not available as a replacement. Instead, Samsung offered a cash refund of $494.99.
Surprisingly, this refund was higher than the original purchase price of the SSD. Recently, prices for memory products have increased sharply due to supply shortages. That is why the customer ended up receiving around 160% of what they originally paid. This makes the frustrating problem into a surprisingly favorable outcome.
“I feel like the vast majority of manufacturers/retailers would only give back the money spent, but instead, Samsung gave me how much it would cost to get a new one, post-shortage price boom,” the customer noted. In fact, this outcome wasn’t just luck. According to Samsung’s SSD warranty policy, if the company is unable to repair or replace a product, it will refund the current market value at the time of the claim. In this case, the policy went in the customer’s favor.
