Samsung has begun rolling out the August 2025 security update to the Galaxy S22 lineup and Galaxy S21 FE. The new software, based on One UI 7, improves security, stability, and reliability while preparing devices for their upcoming One UI 8 upgrade. Samsung’s Android 16-based update hits the stable channel next month.

Galaxy S22 series and S21 FE join Samsung’s August SMR party

The Galaxy S22, S22+, and S22 Ultra are currently receiving the August 2025 SMR (Security Maintenance Release) in Korea, while the update for the S21 FE is available widely across Asia, Europe, and Latin America. The update strengthens system security by addressing 29 Android OS vulnerabilities (including one critical flaw) and 18 additional Galaxy-specific fixes from Samsung.

If you are using any of these devices, the update should be available for you soon. You can manually check for it by heading to: Settings > Software Update > Download and install. The Galaxy S22’s new firmware package carries the build version FYG8 (last four characters), while that for the S21 FE is HYH1 or GYH1, depending on the region.

These devices get nothing more than the aforementioned security fixes with their latest updates. However, Samsung is laying the groundwork for the future. While the Galaxy S22 series and S21 FE won’t join the Android 16-based One UI 8 beta program, the Korean firm has already begun internal testing of the new build for these phones.

The stable One UI 8 rollout will begin in September 2025 with the Galaxy S25 series, followed by older models like the S22, which is expected to receive the major upgrade in October 2025. Most Galaxy devices should get their Android 16 update before the end of the year. For now, users should grab the latest security patches when available to ensure their devices remain secure and ready for the major upgrade ahead.
