Samsung Researcher Elected to Lead 6G Spectrum Group in Asia-Pacific Region

Samsung is playing a key role in 6G standardization through the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). The company has recently revealed that Juyeon Song, a researcher at Samsung, will lead the 6G Spectrum Drafting Group. Part of the Asia-Pacific Telecommunity (APT), this group will help prepare for the World Radiocommunication Conference 2027 (WRC-27).
Juyeon Song to unite Asia-Pacific on 6G spectrum proposal
It’s a great achievement for both South Korea and Samsung, showing their leadership in developing 6G technology. Song was elected chair after a competitive process involving candidates from six other countries. Earlier, she served as chair of the 5G Vision Group for the International Telecommunication Union Radiocommunication Sector (ITU-R). In this role, she led the development of the global vision for 5G mobile communications.
Later, Song helped in the 5G standardization process as vice chair of Study Group 5 (SG 5), the ITU-R’s terrestrial services group. Now, she is in charge of leading 6G spectrum discussions across the Asia-Pacific region. This shows Samsung’s expanding influence in next-generation communications. Furthermore, it gives the company an advantage in securing mid-band spectrum, which is important for expanding its mobile communications business.

Speaking of the APT group, it is an intergovernmental organization that promotes the development of information and communication technology across the Asia-Pacific region. The group coordinates the shared interests and policy directions of its member countries. In addition, it helps the region prepare a united response for the World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC).
Scheduled for October 2027, WRC-27 is expected to decide on new spectrum bands for 6G. Song will help the 38 APT member countries agree on a single proposal for these bands. Her effort will also help the Asia-Pacific region secure favorable outcomes at the conference.
Samsung says that it established its Advanced Communications Research Center (ACRC) and has been researching 6G technology since 2019. Furthermore, it published the 6G White Paper and the 6G Spectrum White Paper to share its vision for next-generation mobile communications.
