Samsung is getting ready to expand its budget smartphone lineup, with the Galaxy A17 seemingly headed to the market soon. It will succeed the Galaxy A16, launched late last year as the first A series phone to be eligible for six years of updates. The upcoming model should get the same software support commitment from Samsung.
The Galaxy A17 may feature the same MediaTek chipset as its predecessor
A new Samsung device carrying the model number SM-A175F recently appeared in the Geekbench database. Based on the company’s current naming convention, it should launch as the Galaxy A17 (4G). The listing confirms that the upcoming phone will feature the MediaTek Helio G99 chipset, the same SoC powering its predecessor.
Introduced a couple of years ago, this 6nm octa-core processor has two Cortex-A76 CPU cores running at 2.2GHz and six Cortex-A55 cores at 2GHz. The chipset features ARM’s Mali-G57 MC2 GPU. The Galaxy A17 (4G) variant tested on Geekbench has 4GB of RAM, though Samsung may also offer a 6GB RAM variant. Storage options may include 128GB and 256GB.
Interestingly, this unannounced budget phone from Samsung runs Android 15 with One UI 7. Since One UI 8 is expected to debut as early as July 2025, with beta releases possibly beginning this month, this raises the question of whether Samsung will ship this phone with One UI 7 or update it to One UI 8 ahead of launch.
If One UI 7 is finalized, then the Galaxy A17 (4G) may arrive sooner than expected — the A16 went official in October, but the new model may launch much before that. As with previous models, Samsung should also have a Galaxy A17 5G in the pipeline. The 5G model could feature either an Exynos or a MediaTek Dimensity processor, depending on the market.
