Samsung Opens More Patents for Free to Support SMEs and Innovation

Samsung has several patent applications across different technologies, and the list continues to grow each year. The good thing is that the company shares some of its patents with partners and small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) for free. This year, the firm has opened 253 patents for free use as part of its technology support program.
Samsung talked about collaboration and innovation in its 2025 Excellent Technology Briefing
Samsung recently hosted the 2025 Excellent Technology Briefing at the Suwon Convention Center in Gyeonggi Province. The session was organized with two agencies: Korea Technology Commercialization Promotion Agency (COMPA) and Korea Intellectual Property Office (KISTA). Launched in 2009, the company provides technical consultations on excellent technologies from domestic universities and research institutes. Furthermore, it aims to help partner companies discover future growth engines and secure new technologies.
At this year’s briefing, around 250 participants attended from 104 partner companies and 45 technology cooperation organizations. Samsung introduced 111 advanced technologies in several areas, such as smart manufacturing using AI and robotics, and next-generation materials. The company also talked about how AI-based productivity innovation can improve work efficiency and competitiveness.
After the presentations, Samsung held consultations on the 253 patents available for free use. These patents are from different segments, including mobile, displays, home appliances, telecommunication, and network fields. Last year, the company transferred 2,300 patents for free to its partners and SMEs. The Korean firm basically wants to create a win-win ecosystem for SMEs and technological innovation. It will continue to provide various support so that its partners can achieve sustainable growth.
“I hope this will be an opportunity for companies to utilize the excellent technologies of universities and public research institutes based on intellectual property to create economic results,” said KISTA President Yoon Byeong-su. “We will continue to support the establishment of an ecosystem for intellectual property creation and utilization across industry, academia, and research.”
