Samsung Likely to Supply OLED Panels for Future iMac

If reports are anything to go by, Samsung will supply the OLED panels for the first OLED MacBook Pro. Apparently, Apple is also working on an iMac with an OLED display, and for that, it will once again source displays from Samsung Display.
Apple asks Samsung and LG for OLED panels for future iMac
ZDNet Korea reports that Apple is finalizing an OLED panel supplier for a future iMac. The supplier hasn’t been finalized yet, and Apple has requested OLED panel samples from Samsung Display and LG Display. Apple may launch an iMac with an OLED display in 2029 or 2030, which is still a few years away.
The report also says that Samsung Display is preparing 220 PPI samples on its QD-OLED line, a noticeable jump from the 160 PPI panels it currently mass-produces for monitors. For this, the company is relying on newly shipped inkjet equipment from SEMES that can handle the higher pixel density.
More importantly, Samsung already has a technical edge with its 5-stack (BBGBG) QD-OLED, which boosts brightness thanks to an added green layer. Combined with QD color conversion, the approach avoids the typical brightness loss seen in filter-based systems, making it better suited for large, high-resolution panels.
LG Display, on the other hand, is taking a more cautious route. It’s still working around the inherent limitations of its W-OLED tech, particularly the brightness drop caused by color filters. The company is developing a newer 5-stack (BGBRG) structure to compensate, but unlike Samsung’s equivalent, this one isn’t ready for mass production yet.
