Samsung May Supply 12-Layer HBM4 Samples to Nvidia and AMD This Month

Samsung faced multiple setbacks in securing deals with major clients for its HBM3E chip. Now that the HBM4 era approaches, the Korean firm is adopting an aggressive strategy to gain a foothold in this space. It is reportedly gearing up to supply HBM4 12-layer samples to its customers, including Nvidia and AMD, this month. If approved, Samsung may sign contracts with clients for the next-generation HBM chip.

SK Hynix is leading the growing HBM market with a large share, all thanks to its early entry into the space. While Samsung is also trying to narrow the gap, it has been struggling to attract major clients like Nvidia. However, it recently entered AMD’s supply chain for the MI350 accelerators, which is a great relief for the company.
The HBM market is set for a major shake-up as it enters the 6th generation high-bandwidth memory era. Customers will demand highly customized chips according to specific requirements of their AI accelerators, making the competition more complex. “The trend of customization according to customers will continue starting with HBM4,” said SK Group Chairman Choi Tae-won (via Ajunews).
Industry analysts expect that SK Hynix’s monopoly will end once full-scale competition begins next year. The company currently exclusively supplies HBM3E to Nvidia, but the supply chain could diversify with the arrival of HBM4 chips. While SK Hynix once again took the lead by supplying 12-layer HBM4 samples to Nvidia in March 2025, Micron followed just three months later with its own samples.
Now, Samsung is also preparing to enter the race, with plans to supply its HBM4 samples to Nvidia and AMD this month. The former will use the memory chips in its upcoming AI accelerator (GPU), Rubin, while the latter will include them in the MI400 series. The Korean firm aims to begin mass production of HBM4 chips in the second half of this year. Only time will tell whether Samsung’s efforts will help the company gain momentum in the competitive HBM market.
