Samsung May Move to In-House GPU for Exynos Mobile Chips

Samsung’s Exynos 2600 chip features AMD’s Radeon GPU architecture, but the company developed the GPU design in-house. Reports suggest it’s the beginning of bigger things to come. The Exynos 2800 (tentative name), coming in 2027, may include a GPU designed entirely in-house. This could give the Korean firm greater control over graphics and AI performance in its devices while reducing dependence on external companies.
Samsung aims for complete GPU control in future Exynos chips
According to a report from Hankyung, Samsung’s System LSI Business Division plans to develop its own GPU architecture and design it for the Exynos 2800. The company also plans to use its own GPU development to grow its application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) business. On top of that, it may be able to make Exynos AP (equipped with its own GPU) available for a wide range of devices, from AI smartphones to smart glasses, autonomous vehicle software, and humanoid robots.
For the uninitiated, architecture is how a GPU does its calculations, and design is how those calculations are implemented in the chip. As of now, only a few companies, such as Nvidia, AMD, Intel, and Qualcomm, can create GPUs using their own architecture. This makes the Korean firm’s plan to create its own GPU an important step.
Samsung’s decision likely stems from the evolution of smartphones in recent years. Earlier, GPUs used to handle only image processing and gaming. But today, they play a key role in running AI on devices. Samsung relied on ARM GPUs for its Exynos chips until 2021. Later, the company teamed up with AMD and has now gained confidence to develop its own GPU technology. This could allow the company to hold complete control over the GPU’s performance and customize it for its devices.
For now, all eyes are on the Exynos 2600, which uses AMD’s architecture with Samsung’s design. The chip is expected to power the upcoming Galaxy S26 and S26+ models in select regions.
