Samsung has expanded its Tactical Edition lineup by including a new rugged tablet, the Galaxy Tab Active 5 Tactical Edition. It’s a mission-ready tablet that aims to deliver greater situational awareness and decision-making capabilities. The device is available through select IT channel partners in the US.
As with previous Tactical Edition devices, Samsung once again teamed up with the Department of Defense (DoD) to develop its Galaxy Tab Active 5 Tactical Edition. The device comes with support for thousands of DoD personnel across all military branches.
Key features from previous Tactical Edition generations
It packs all the core features from previous generations, including tactical radio interoperability and mission-ready software support. On top of that, it introduces new hardware enhancements that ensure the safe and secure transmission of classified information.
The tablet allows military personnel to connect with most tactical radios, drone systems, laser range finders, external GPS, and more. It also aims to deliver powerful connectivity with support for all conventional cellular capabilities, including 5G, LTE, CBRS, Wi-Fi 6E, and AT&T FirstNet Ready.
To improve tactical teams’ decision-making capabilities, the tablet packs a bunch of advanced situational awareness tools. For example, its Night Vision mode supports viewing through night vision optic devices. Other mission-ready applications include the Android Team Awareness Kit (ATAK) and the Battlefield Assisted Trauma Distributed Observation Kit (BATDOK).
As for security, Samsung Knox security offers defense-grade security to safeguard sensitive data. Integration of the Hypervisor Device Manager (HDM) solution further enhances security, preventing hacking of all types. It meets rigorous industry regulations, including NSA’s Commercial Solutions for Classified (CSfC) Components List, enabling active-duty and civilian military personnel to securely access classified information.
The Galaxy Tab Active 5 Tactical Edition can tolerate extreme conditions too, with drop resistance up to 1.5 meters and an IP68 rating for dust and water protection. On top of that, the device is MIL-STD-810H compliant to withstand extreme altitudes, temperatures, vibration, and humidity.
The device has a long-lasting replaceable battery and a sensitive touchscreen that works in wet conditions, with gloves, or with the rugged S Pen. Equipped with an Exynos 1380 processor, it aims to deliver powerful and efficient computing capabilities. Other features include an 8-inch premium resolution display, a 5MP front camera, and a 13MP rear camera.
