Samsung and KT (a South Korean wireless carrier) have achieved a breakthrough in 6G development. The two companies successfully validated AI-based radio access network (AI-RAN) optimization technology on KT’s commercial network. Their results show that the technology can deliver stable, uninterrupted service in many real-world environments.

AI-RAN trial shows promising results for the upcoming 6G network

Traditionally, mobile networks use a base station to apply the same network configuration to every device. However, if the device moves into a weak-signal area or travels at high speed, the connection becomes weak or even drops. This is where AI-RAN optimization technology comes into play, as it adjusts network settings for each user. The technology uses AI to learn users’ movement paths and usage patterns. It then predicts potential disruptions and makes changes to avoid the connectivity issues.

To validate the technology, Samsung Research and KT’s Future Network Laboratory performed a field test with about 18,000 users in select areas of Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province. The region included different signal environments for the most accurate results. During the trial, they applied AI-RAN to users with a history of repeated service disruptions. The system then created user-specific network configurations according to their patterns.

After comparing network performance before and after the AI adjustments, the results showed a substantial drop in disconnection rates for those users. There was also a noticeable improvement for other users in the same region, suggesting that personalized optimization can improve the network’s overall stability. This achievement could play a big role in the upcoming 6G network.

“This is a major milestone that shows how AI can improve user experience on real-world commercial networks,” said JinGuk Jeong, Executive Vice President and Head of the Advanced Communications Research Center, Samsung Research at Samsung Electronics. “Through close collaboration with KT, we will continue shaping and validating the next generation of AI-driven communication technologies.”
