Samsung has been long rumored to launch an affordable Flip phone this year, potentially called the Galaxy Z Flip FE. We now have our first official confirmation of its existence. While the company hasn’t said anything itself, a firmware listing for an unannounced device with the model number SM-F761 on its servers strongly suggests that the Fan Edition (FE) foldable is real, and its development is going in full swing.
Galaxy Z Flip FE confirmed? Samsung’s own firmware listing suggests so
Spotted by X user @erenylmaz075, Samsung recently uploaded firmware, labeled F761BXXU0AYB1, for a Galaxy phone with the model number SM-F761. No existing device bears this model number, but we can still make something out of it. The product is a Flip series smartphone — the lineup typically follows the “SM-Fx1” model number convention.
To recall, last year’s Galaxy Z Flip 6 was SM-F741, and this year’s Flip 7 is expected to be SM-F751. Going by this, one might link SM-F761 to the Galaxy Z Flip 8 coming next year. We don’t completely rule out this possibility either. However, it is too early for Samsung to start firmware development for the Flip 8. The company is still several months away from launching the Flip 7.
All things considered, SM-F761 should be a new Flip foldable coming later this year. While the available evidence suggests it’s the Galaxy Z Flip FE (or whatever Samsung ends up calling its affordable foldable), it could also be the Flip 7. Samsung might want to match the model number convention for its Fold and Flip lineups. The Fold 6 was SM-F956 and the Fold 7 will be SM-F966.
In that case, the Flip FE could bear the model number SM-F951. After all, it is likely to be less powerful than the Flip 7. It doesn’t make sense if Samsung uses the model number SM-F961 for the Flip FE and SM-F751 for the Flip 7. Expect more details to emerge in the coming months. The new foldables will go official in July or August this year.
