With Daylight Saving Time (DST), people can better use the extended daylight available during summer. It is a practice of advancing clocks, usually for one hour. Although it might seem like a minor adjustment, it affects the sleep quality in the long term. Samsung has analyzed the sleep data of Samsung Health users from the day before and the day of DST in the Spring of 2024. The company recently shared its findings and announced a new feature to help improve your sleep.

Samsung analyzes sleep patterns and launches new health feature

In this study, the Korean firm analyzed the sleep patterns of Samsung Health users from the US, Canada, and over 40 European countries. The findings show the impact of DST on bedtime and wake-up time — after DST, people fell asleep 33 minutes later than the previous night and woke up 19 minutes earlier. It also found that young adults in their 20s were the most affected.

More importantly, the system calculated the Sleep Score based on an evaluation of a user’s total sleep time, awake time, sleep cycle, and physical and mental recovery, and it remained at the worst level for weeks after DST.

With World Sleep Day approaching, Samsung is bringing a new feature to its Samsung Health app to counter DST disruptions and improve overall sleep quality. This new feature, called the Sleep Environment Report, will be available on smartphones running One UI 7.0. Users should update their Samsung Health app to version 6.29.5 or higher to access the feature. And the device should be connected to SmartThings.

Regarding its release schedule, Samsung will make the Sleep Environment Report feature available to the Samsung Health app later this month. With the help of SmartThings and Samsung’s device ecosystem, it will offer insights and analysis on key factors that affect sleep quality, such as temperature, humidity, CO2, and illuminance.
