Samsung keeps filing a bunch of patents every now and then. You’ve probably noticed that in our patent coverage, too. Not all of them turn into real products, but they’re solid proof that the company’s experimenting with stuff. These patents help define a company’s value, which is part of why Samsung stays one of the biggest names in tech worldwide.
Samsung tops South Korea’s patent rankings with more than 130,000 filings
The Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) announced who holds the most patents in the country, according to a report from Pulse. No surprise here. Samsung tops the list. In fact, for every 100 patents registered in South Korea, 6 belong to Samsung Electronics.
More specifically, Samsung holds about 134,802 patents in total, which makes up roughly 6% of all patents ever registered in the country. That’s a massive number by any standard. In 2024 alone, Samsung filed over 5,200 patents, underscoring its continued drive to lead in semiconductors, mobile tech, smart devices, and more.
This announcement came as part of a special report marking two milestones, the 80th anniversary of Korea’s liberation and the 60th Invention Day. The report takes a look back at all patents filed since South Korea introduced its Patent Act in 1946.
Samsung entered the electronics business in 1969, and since then, it’s grown into one of the world’s tech powerhouses. It regularly files patents not just for products it plans to release soon, but also for ideas and technologies it might use in the future. This helps Samsung protect its innovations and secure a strong position in key industries.
Other top-ranking companies in patent filings include LG Electronics, Hyundai Motor, SK hynix, and LG Display. But Samsung stands out from the pack in terms of volume. Even though the larger Samsung Group spans a bunch of industries, Samsung Electronics is the only affiliate to crack the top five. That just shows how central the electronics arm is to the group’s overall success
