Galaxy Z Fold 7: Design and Hardware

The Galaxy Z Fold 7 introduces a major design overhaul to Samsung’s Fold lineup. While the overall form factor remains identical, the new model is remarkably thin. It measures just 4.2mm when unfolded and 8.9mm when folded. To recall, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 measures 5.6mm (unfolded) and 12.1mm (folded). That’s a dramatic reduction in thickness in just one generation. The full dimensions are as follows:

  • Galaxy Z Fold 6:
    • Folded: 153.5 x 68.1 x 12.1mm
    • Unfolded: 153.5 x 132.6 x 5.6mm
  • Galaxy Z Fold 7:
    • Folded: 158.4 x 72.8 x 8.9mm
    • Unfolded: 158.4 x 143.2 x 4.2mm

As you can see, the new Fold is taller and wider than its predecessor, allowing Samsung to equip it with larger screens on the inside and outside (more on this later). This also helped it retain a large battery despite a massive reduction in thickness. The Fold 7 is substantially lighter as well, measuring just 215 grams compared to the Fold 6’s 239 grams. It is even lighter than the Galaxy S25 Ultra (218 grams).

A redesigned hinge with durability upgrades

It isn’t difficult to imagine that the Galaxy Z Fold 7’s redesign required Samsung to come up with a new hinge design too. The company had to develop a thinner and lighter hinge without compromising on durability. The so-called Armor FlexHinge has an enhanced water droplet design and features an all-new multi-rail structure that reduces the screen crease and improves durability.

The main display has also been restructured for a thinner and lighter p[rofile, with the addition of a titanium backplate making it stronger. Additionally, Samsung claims a 50% thicker Ultra-Thin Glass (UTG) panel for enhced scratch resistance. The cover screen has Corning’s Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2 protection, while we get Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on the back. The frame is made of stronger than ever Advanced Armor Aluminum.

Samsung has also reportedly incorporated new dust-protective brushes along the hinge to block dust and debris from entering the phone. However, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 doesn’t get an upgrade over the IP48 dust and water resistance rating of its predecessor. There have been talks about Galaxy foldables finally getting an IP68 rating, but not to be.

A bigger profile means the new foldable features an expansive cooling system as well, ensuring efficient heat dissipation. With a thickness of just about 4mm when unfolded, durability remains a concern. But Samsung seems to have built the Galaxy Z Fold 7 to top-notch durability standards.

Galaxy Z Fold 7: Display

The Galaxy Z Fold 7 sports an 8-inch main folding display with the same specs as its predecessor. It is a Dynamic LTPO AMOLED 2X panel with a peak brightness of around 2,600 nits, 120Hz of variable refresh rate, and HDR10+ support. Unfortunately, the Fold 7 misses out on Samsung’s revolutionary anti-reflective properties. This groundbreaking technology drastically reduces the screen glare when using phones outdoors.

All in all, the main display offers similar specs as the Fold 6’s 7.6-inch panel. However, it is touted top be more efficient, potentially improving the battery life. As mentioned above, Samsung’s redesigned hinge also allows the disply to fold more gently, reducing the crease. On the front, the new Fold sports an identical 6.5-inch screen. However, a wider profile means the aspect ratio now matches those of regular smartphones, enhancing the overall experience. The cover screen no longer feels tall and narrow.

Unfortunately, Samsung’s pursuit of a thin and light foldable forced it to remove the S Pen. The company couldn’t fit the digitizer within a 4.2mm thickness, and its long-rumored digitizer-free S Pen technology seemingly isn’t ready for prime time yet. Samsung plans to reintroduce S Pen to its foldables in the future, but only if it meets certain performance requirements without adding the bulk (digitizer). COnsumer demand will also play a vital role in deciding whether the stylus returs.

Galaxy Z Fold 7: Camera

The Galaxy Z Fold 7 is the foldable of dreams in many ways. It is slim, has bigger and wider screens, and reduces the display crease. But that’s not all. The new Samsung Fold also excels in the camera department. The device sport sthe same camera setup as the Galaxy Z Fold SE, a limited edition foldable Samsung launched in Korea and China last year.

More precisely, we are looking at a 200MP primary shooter, the same one found on the Galaxy S25 Ultra. This 1/1.3-inch sensor has an f/1.7 aperture and features 0.6µm pixels, offering OIS (Optical Image Stabilization) and multi-directional PDAF (phase-detection autofocus) support. The S25 Ultra’s primary camera produces excellent images and videos, and the Fold 7 should match it, if not go one better. Samsung is still refining the camera performance of its latest flagships, and forthcoming One UI 8 updates could improve things further.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite’s ISP improvements and advanced camera algorithms also help improve image quality. Moreover, the device features a new AI-powered ProVisual Engine with several notable improvements. It delivers sharper, more vibrant image output, improved digital zoom quality, and enhanced video stabilization. The Fold 7 also supports 10-bit HDR for more color depth in photos and videos.

No more UDC

The Galaxy Z Fold 7’s main camera is paired with a 12MP ultrawide lens and a 10MP 3x zoom camera. These are the same cameras as the Fold 6, though expect improvements in image quality thanks to changes in other areas. The external selfie camera also remains unchanged — you get a 10MP punch-hole unit on top of the cover screen. However, the internal selfie camera gets a much needed upgrade.

If you recall, Samsung has equipped its Fold models with an under-display selfie camera (UDC) since the Galaxy Z Fold 3 in 2021. The company has reused the same 4MP sensor all the way through to last year’s Fold 6. It focused on software improvements and display density adjustments rather than introducing a new UDC solution. Unfortunately, those improvements weren’t enough, and Samsung has now dropped UDC in favor of a traditional punch-hole camera, a 10MP unit.

The idea with the UDC was to offer a more immersive full-screen experience to users, with the inner selfie camera primarily intended for video calls on the big screen. Since these foldables feature a secondary screen with a punch-hole front-facing camera on top of it, users can switch to the external camera when they need quality selfies. Users can also capture selfies from the rear camera by unfolding the device and using the cover screen as the viewfinder.

But that doesn’t mean the inner selfie camera should be completely overlooked. After all, foldables cost a fortune for a smartphone, and buyers deserve the best of everything. The first-gen UDC solution was expectedly poor, and Samsung hasn’t been able to improve it much even after four generations. So it’s good that Samsung has dropped it and switched back to a more reliable solution.

Galaxy Z Fold 7: Processor and Specs

Samsung ships the Galaxy Z Fold 7 with the same processor as the Galaxy S25 Ultra and the rest of the S25 lineup. It’s the Snapdragon 8 Elite “for Galaxy” version, clocked at a whopping 4.47GHz. This octa-core chip has two custom Oryon CPU cores running at the maximum speed, while the other six CPU cores operate at 3.53GHz. Even the base speed is higher than the peak speed of the Fold 6’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor (3.39GHz), all the while being more efficient, thanks to the switch from 4nm to 3nm process technology.

With an industry-leading chipset, paired with up to 16GB of RAM, expect a buttery smooth performance from the Galaxy Z Fold 7. From lag-free gaming to snappy camera performance, the new foldable excels at everything. Its massive size allows for efficient heat dissipation, keeping the temperature in check even during the most resource-savvy usage. The introduction of custom Oryon CPU cores previously used in Qualcomm’s X series PC processors to its mobile SoC lineup has done wonders.

Beyond the CPU and GPU performance, the Snapdragon 8 Elite brings massive AI and camera processing upgrades. It features a first-of-its-kind solution that allows the NPU to access the native raw data from the sensor to enhance the image quality, fundamentally changing how the chipset processes images captured by the camera. The chip supports LPDDR5X DRAM and UFS 4.0 storage, along with Qualcomm’s FastConnect 7900 system with Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth v5.4, and UWB (Ultra-Wideband) connectivity.

Finally, a 16GB RAM upgrade globally

Samsung launched the Galaxy S25 Ultra with 16GB of RAM in China, but this variant isn’t available globally. Thankfully, the company doesn’t do the same with the Galaxy Z Fold 7. The new Fold’s 16GB RAM variant, which is paired with 1TB of storage, is available globally. The 256GB and 512GB storage options still come with 12GB of RAM. With One UI 8, you also get more virtual RAM.

Galaxy Z Fold 7: Software

As we just mentioned, Samsung ships the Galaxy Z Fold 7 with One UI 8 onboard. The Korean firm has made up for a delayed One UI 7 release with an early launch of One UI 8, based on ndroid 16. This update introduces several foldable-specific featrues, including enhcnaed multitasking. When using Galaxy AI to edit photos, you can simultaneously see the original photo and the dited/generated one on the main screen.

One UI 8 surely isn’t a major overhaul like One UI 7. With this update, Samsung is focusing on refining the user experiences with subtle tweaks based on user feedback and internal testing. However, there’s still plenty to talk about, including camera enhancements, new editing featrues, upgraded Galaxy AI suite, and more.

Galaxy Z Fold 7: Battery and Charging

A slimmer but wider profile allowed Samsung to keep the battery size unchanged for the Galaxy Z Fold 7. We are looking at a 4,400mAh battery, which is just about enough to power the phone through the day. While the screens get larger, enhanced power efficiency, AI-powered optimizations,  and the Snapdragon 8 Elite’s efficiency improvements help extend the battery life.

Early tests show the Galaxy Z Fold 7 surpassing its predecessor in battery endurance. However, the battery life still feels a weak link in an otherwise excellent foldable smartphone. Samsung needs to find a way to increase the battery capacity of its foldables soon.

Coming to the charging speed, once again we see no changes. The Fold 7 charges at a modest speed of 25W, which is slower than some mid-range Galaxy phones. Samsung was expected to offer 45W wired charging on the new Fold, but it didn’t. Wireless charging also tops out at 15W, thoughyou get Qi2 support with compatible magnetic cases. The device doesn’t have built-in magents for native Qi2 support.

Galaxy Z Fold 7: Price, Colors, and Availability

The Galaxy Z Fold 7 and its siblings debuted at Samsung’s Unpacked event in Brooklyn, New York on July 9. Pre-orders opened immediately after the event, with general sales beginning on July 25. The company offers the phone in four colors: Silver Shadow, Blue Shadow, and Jet Black as the three standard options and Mint as the fourth shade exclusively through it sofficial website.

Coming to the prices, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is $100 pricier than its predecessor. It starts at $1,900 in the US, and goes up to $2,419. Of course, that’s not cheap, but Samsung says manufacturing costs increased this year. In fact, the company lowered its profit margin to ensure consumers don’t have to pay a bigger premium.
