While the foldable market may take a few years to become mainstream, Samsung wants to strengthen its position in this space. The company reportedly plans to make significant improvements to its 2026 foldable phones, especially the Galaxy Z Flip 8, to attract buyers. As a result, it expects these foldable phones to perform well in terms of sales compared to their predecessors.

Samsung shows confidence in foldable market growth

According to a report from The Bell, Samsung has set a combined sales target of 6.7 million units for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Z Flip 8. This is about 10% higher than the current models, showing the company’s confidence in the next-gen foldables. The company plans to make noticeable improvements to the Z Flip 8. It may reduce both thickness and weight by more than 10%.

Samsung’s latest foldables, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7, continue to sell quite well. The Z Fold 7, in particular, has received praise from fans around the world for its lighter weight and thinner design. It measures just 4.2mm thick when unfolded and 8.9mm when folded. This is much thinner than the Z Fold 6 (5.6mm unfolded and 12.1mm folded). In terms of weight, it is only 215 grams, which is lighter than the Fold 6 (239 grams). For photography, it boasts a 200MP primary camera, the same as the Galaxy S25 Ultra.

However, when it comes to the Z Flip 7, the improvements were modest. Its weight remains largely unchanged at 188 grams. Moreover, its thickness is 13.7mm when folded and 6.5mm when unfolded, showing only slight reductions (by 8.1% and 5.8%, respectively) compared to its predecessor.

Speaking of upgrades, the cover screen has increased from 3.4 inches to 4.1 inches, while the battery capacity has boosted from 4,000mAh to 4,300mAh. However, they are not enough to generate the same attention as the Z Fold 7, despite a relatively lower price tag. As a result, Samsung may put more effort into making the Z Flip 8 slimmer, giving buyers a more appealing design.
