Samsung Display Ramps Up EL-QD Development to Thwart Competition

Despite significant challenges, Samsung has been holding the top spot position in the TV market for 19 years in a row. The company sees electroluminescence quantum dots (EL-QD) as a key technology that could boost its business for the next 10 to 20 years. As such, it has accelerated the development of EL-QD technology to strengthen its lead in the display sector.

Samsung’s collaborative effort to improve EL-QD Technology

EL-QD represents the true quantum dot (QD) technology. According to a report from the Korean outlet Businesskorea, Samsung’s Visual Display (VD) division, SAIT (formerly known as the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology), and Samsung Display are jointly working to develop this technology.

Quantum dots are semiconductor nanoparticles, measuring just a few nanometers in size, with their emission color determined by their size and unique properties. So far, manufacturers have only used QD technology in films, depending on LEDs or OLEDs for light sources. Because of this, many believe it has not yet reached its true potential.

The Korean firm’s EL-QD technology allows QDs to emit light directly in response to electrical signals. This technology could be a game changer in the premium panel market as it surpasses OLED, which has been the main focus for South Korean companies. The best thing is that EL-QD technology retains OLED’s advantages while offering superior color accuracy, power efficiency, and lifespan. Once Samsung stabilizes EL-QD technology, it could potentially replace OLED technology.

As of now, the company is working to improve QD electrical properties for better stability and higher light-emission efficiency. Samsung aims to commercialize EL-QD within a few years, taking an early lead in the industry to thwart the competition. The technology has a smaller gap between South Korean and Chinese companies like BOE and CSOT.

“China is aggressively fostering EL-QD to gain technological supremacy after OLED. In terms of research papers and technological achievements, Chinese firms are currently ahead of LG Display,” an industry insider said.
