Right now, if you want to take 24MP photos on a Samsung Galaxy, you have to use the Expert RAW app. This feature is only available on the Galaxy S24 and S25 series, and it adds an extra step when all you really want to do is open your camera and start shooting. Thankfully, that might change soon.
Samsung recently hinted that it’s considering adding the Expert RAW’s 24MP mode to the stock Camera app. A company representative responded to a user request on Samsung’s Korean Community forum, saying they would look into it. While nothing is set in stone, this suggests that Samsung might roll out the feature in a future update.
It would be great if Samsung brings Expert RAW’s 24MP to the Camera app
Bringing 24MP mode to the stock Camera app would be a welcome change. Right now, Samsung’s default Camera app captures photos in 12MP, even if your phone has a much higher-resolution sensor. This is because Samsung uses pixel-binning and multi-frame processing to improve image quality while keeping file sizes small. If you want to shoot at full resolution — like 50MP or 200MP — you can, but you lose out on these processing benefits.
A 24MP mode would be the sweet spot. It would offer more detail than 12MP shots while keeping file sizes manageable and maintaining image processing perks. Apple already does this. With the 2023 iPhone 15 series, iPhones started capturing 24MP photos by default.
Currently, the 24MP option in Expert RAW only works with the primary camera, but if Samsung brings it to the stock Camera app, it could also work with other lenses. The Galaxy S25 Ultra, for example, has a 50MP ultrawide and a 50MP telephoto camera, which could also benefit from this mode.
While we’ll have to wait and see if Samsung follows through, this change would be a step in the right direction. If Samsung plays its cards right, Galaxy users might soon have an easier way to capture sharper, more detailed photos without jumping through hoops.
