Samsung Capitalizes on Trade-In Boom as Returns Hit Record Highs

It looks like smartphone consumers are leaning towards the trade-in program. The program is seeing solid momentum, with 2025 marking a record year for returns. Samsung is emerging as a key beneficiary of this trend in the Android segment, especially with the Galaxy S22 Ultra 5G.
The smartphone trade-in program saw record-breaking growth in 2025
According to data from Assurant, mobile trade-in programs returned a record $6.4 billion to consumers in the US in 2025. This is a sharp 42% increase compared to 2024. In Q4 2025, the program generated $2.8 billion, making it the highest single quarter on record.
Speaking of the most-traded device, the iPhone 13 secured the top position in all four quarters of the year. As for Android, Samsung’s Galaxy S22 Ultra 5G maintained its lead for the sixth consecutive quarter thanks to its strong resale value.

The data also shows people are keeping their phones longer before upgrading. The average age of iPhones has reached 3.80 years, up from 3.67 in 2024. Meanwhile, Android devices are now at 3.96 years, up from 3.52 in 2024. In fact, during Q4 2025, Android devices saw 4.1 years for the first time.
“These trends point to a trade-in and upgrade ecosystem that delivers more value and supports a healthier circular economy for all stakeholders,” said Assurant. “By extending the life of devices and rewarding consumers at historic levels, these programs benefit all participants in the ecosystem”.
Last year, Samsung introduced a new Galaxy Trade-In Program that lets users trade in their devices without purchasing a new smartphone. This gives buyers the freedom to unlock value from their old devices at any time.
Of course, the company’s existing trade-in program is still available to customers who are upgrading to a new device. For example, you can save up to $720 when purchasing a new Galaxy S26 Ultra. Don’t forget to buy through the SammyGuru reward program to score free accessories like a 65W charger (details here).
