In March 2025, the US District Court dismissed Samsung’s preemptive lawsuit against Oura. However, the Korean firm is not backing down as it has now appealed the ruling to the Federal Circuit, aiming to protect the Galaxy Ring’s position in the smart ring market. The US Federal Circuit is now reportedly reviewing the appeal.

Samsung sees a legal threat from Oura over its Galaxy Ring

When it comes to the smart ring market, Oura is one of the biggest competitors of Samsung. As a new player in this space, Samsung is concerned that Oura may file lawsuits against its smart ring. After all, Oura, which owns over 100 smart ring patents, has a history of filing patent infringement lawsuits against smart ring brands, including Circular, RingConn, and Ultrahuman.

So, ahead of Galaxy Ring’s launch last year, Samsung filed a lawsuit in the San Francisco Division of the District Court against Oura. The Korean firm asked the court for a declaratory judgment that its ring didn’t violate Oura’s patents. Samsung took this step because it planned to start mass production of the Galaxy Ring and launch the device without any potential legal hurdles.

The lawsuit documents note, “Oura’s declared strategy of asserting infringement against all entrants into the smart ring market presents an actual, imminent risk to Samsung and the sale of its Galaxy Ring product”. However, in March this year, the US District Court dismissed Samsung’s preemptive strike, saying that “These allegations do not reveal a likelihood or intent to enforce Oura’s patents against Samsung, and concludes it lacks jurisdiction as the complaint does not allege an affirmative act”.

However, despite the dismissal, Samsung still believes that Oura may file a lawsuit in the future. So, the Korean firm has recently appealed the ruling to the Federal Circuit. As @ipfray shared on X, “Samsung is appealing to the Federal Circuit the dismissal of its declaratory-judgment complaint against OURA Ring in the Northern District of California”. Since Samsung plans to expand its Galaxy Ring portfolio, it wants to reduce legal uncertainty.
