Samsung Advances 6G Development, Researcher Receives Excellence Award

Samsung has announced a major breakthrough in the development of 6G technology. The company successfully verified eXtreme multiple-input multiple-output (X-MIMO) technology in the 7 GHz frequency band. In addition to the technical achievement, a Samsung researcher has also received recognition for contributions to wireless connectivity.
Samsung sees progress in 6G innovation with X-MIMO verification
Samsung conducted X-MIMO verification in the 7 GHz band at its Seoul R&D Campus. The company collaborated with KT Corporation (KT) and Keysight Technologies. The former helped establish the outdoor wireless testing environment, while the latter provided terminal testing equipment. The Korean firm also used a 6G base station prototype with 256 digital ports.
During testing, Samsung saw a peak downlink data speed of up to 3 gigabits per second (Gbps). Thanks to ultra-high-density antenna technology, it integrates more antenna elements into equipment of comparable size. This technology plays a key role in 6G networks, offering up to four times the antenna density compared with current 5G infrastructure. Likewise, the 7 GHz band is a strong candidate for 6G, offering an optimal balance between coverage and data capacity.
“Through our collaboration with KT and Keysight, we have demonstrated the potential for significant improvements in data rates for next-generation communications,” said JinGuk Jeong, Executive Vice President and Head of Advanced Communications Research Center, Samsung Research at Samsung Electronics. “We remain committed to pioneering future network technologies that will enable diverse services and enhanced user experiences in the 6G era.”
Meanwhile, Dr. Eko Onggosanusi, a researcher at Samsung Research America (SRA), received the 2025 Excellence Award from the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). Onggosanusi earned recognition for his contributions to 3GPP RAN Working Group 1 (RAN1) within the 3GPP community. These include advancing multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, a core technology for both 4G and 5G. This is the eighth time a Samsung employee has received the honor, showing its efforts in 3GPP standardization.
