Samsung is a powerhouse in smartphone camera technology, with its 200MP sensors leading the industry in resolution and innovation. These sensors already power some of the most advanced smartphone cameras, and their presence is about to expand. A wave of upcoming Chinese flagships is reportedly set to adopt Samsung’s 200MP ISOCELL HP3, HP5, and HP9 telephoto sensors, signaling a major boost for the company’s image sensor business.

Leaker Ice Universe claims that Chinese phone makers are ready to embrace Samsung’s cutting-edge zoom sensors in a big way. In fact, some premium Chinese phones already feature 200MP telephoto lenses powered by ISOCELL technology. This trend is expected to accelerate in 2025 and beyond. A reputed industry source recently confirmed that Oppo’s upcoming Find X9 Pro will feature Samsung’s unannounced ISOCELL HP5 sensor.

The ISOCELL HP3 and HP9 may also power telephoto cameras on multiple Chinese flagships in the coming months. This surge could establish Samsung’s sensors as the gold standard for long-range photography. Unfortunately, the company still doesn’t use these industry-leading sensors for zoom cameras on its Galaxy flagships. While the Galaxy S25 Ultra does have a 200MP primary shooter, none of its telephoto lenses feature a 200MP sensor.

Reports suggest this is due to its design priorities. While Chinese brands like Vivo, Xiaomi, and Honor aren’t afraid to launch phones with bulky, elaborate camera modules, Samsung continues to prioritize sleek design and balanced form factors in its Galaxy lineup. Incorporating large 200MP telephoto sensors would require bigger camera housings and possibly thicker phones, something Samsung isn’t willing to compromise on for the mainstream Galaxy series.

Samsung reportedly prefers to deliver practical photography improvements, focusing on software-driven features, computational photography, and AI enhancements, rather than chasing the highest specs on paper. However, with its camera sensor division pushing the boundaries of zoom photography with advanced 200MP ISOCELL sensors, it might prove to be a missed opportunity for Samsung. Galaxy phones are already a step behind in raw telephoto specs, and software-driven enhancements may not be enough.
